I will never forget the term someone who was selling an early '70s Rick on Ebay last year used to describe the checkered binding: 'railroad binding'. Haha!

Are the red dots only found on bound vintage necks?

The two years we've talked about already--1963 and '74, for sure....I can't recall any other years at the moment that have examples of these, especailly on newer (last 20-25 years) of production...

Holy thread resurrection, Batman! There is a 60's 370 body on Ebay right now with red dots.

I always thought '74 4001's were the only Red Dots until searching the forum and found reference to these early 60's 3XX guitars.

My '64 460 has red dots...always thought that that was an early-mid '60's thing. Thanks for resurrecting the thread! Didn't realize some '70's instruments also had red dots.

Red dots are all over the place, seemingly random but more often in the early 60s.

I've only seen them on deluxe instruments (with binding), which makes sense as you wouldn't see them directly against a rosewood board.

Another seldom-seen rarity is having three dots at the 12th fret. A '65 365OS I sold to Danotron years ago has this feature. They might even be red, I can't recall!
