If I had to take an educated guess I'd say the Ruby was the 4003. The Ruby finish and the slightly fatter horns give it away as a 4003. Second half ot the '80s, of course. Am I right?

1979 Amberglo (special order), it is lighter in the flesh.

It's more than gorgeous, it's downright sexy! You know, I'm still wondering what sort of finish a 1976 4001 some local guy was selling last year had. He described it as a 'caramel finish'. Maybe it was Amberglo after all. All I know is that he sold the bass for nearly two grand!

A few things tipped me off, Peter: 1) Its Ruby. According to the Mike Parks finish timeline(which isn't always correct) Ruby became available in 1980. That alone means its probably a 4003. 2)It doesn't have a split pickguard which means it was probably made in the late eighties. 3) The tuners appear to be the new Schallers which have only been used since the mid-1980's. They're brighter than the tuners on your 70's 4001's and appear to not have a black bushing around the post like the 70's 4001 tuners.

Jeff, you ever fancied a job as a detective? Correct on all counts!
