John, welcome! You are going to absolutely love this place! My take on your dilemma, get the V63 first. If it doesn't do the trick, try the "vintage switch" mod from the new 4003, which John Hall describes himself over at the RIC website board. It just adds the old .0047 cap into the bridge pickup circuit, supposedly giving you more clank (or less bass!). If that still doesn't do it, throw some high gains in it! All easy stuff, and relatively affordable. Or, buy both!

Quote -"I have a V63 and have played 4001CSs. Except for cosmetic changes and the Certificate, the two are identical".
i know lots of people who seem to have experienced that but I've owned 2 CSs and 1 V63 and have played several more V63s, and in my experience they sound very different. To my ears the CSs sound quite a bit harder and less open, less "airy" for want of a better word.
After saying that a Rick-owning friend played my CS and V63 when I had them both and couldn't tell the difference, but to me they were like night and day.

The original tailpieces were a solid casting so those never have the lift problem; CS's is one of those. Some of the chrome is coming off it, however.
