BTW, in case anyone was wondering, the term "soccer" derives from the sport's official name which is "Association Football".

Years back it was deemed necessary to differentiate between that and "Rugby Football". Hence Association (or "assoc." in its abbreviated form) became know in speech as soccer.

Football: The world language.

A common point of reference for most nationalities of the world meeting for the first time. I work with many, and the first topic of conversation is nearly always football. We can always communicate and football is nearly always the catalyst. It evokes passion and emotion, and unites the common people in a way that only disaster and war does in the US.

For many, it is their life, and their temple. As I tell my American friends, we go to football matches, you go to church....

I'm back in the UK next week to soak up the greatest sporting event on the planet.

For us west coaster's it's England vs. Paraguay at 6 AM on Saturday. I'll be ready...and half asleep.

Rooney makes England a dangerous squad... oh wait

Paraguay was much better when Chilavert was lobbing goals from across the pitch and slapping people around.

Matches I would like to see the most: US v Iran, England v Argentina. A little more exciting than Dallas and Miami!

I'll be at a friends house for the 9am kick off and most people will be drinking beer with the cornflakes..and then there is the rest of the day!

Rooney will be back! My vote is for England vs. Germany in the second round.

Although I played soccer for a couple of years in high school, I don't follow it much anymore. I understand its importance outside the USA, though.

I listen to XM Satellite Radio all the time, and they have been airing World Cup preview segments with Andres Cantor. I really like his enthusiasm, and I can feel the build of excitement from his segments.

It's NFL Football and MLB Baseball for me, though. Enjoy the Cup - I hope it's an entertaining and dramatic series for you all....

Portugal vs Angola will be a nasty one. Old colonial issues...I think 3 or 4 got sent off last time.

And don't forget Germany vs Poland in the group stages either.

My brother and his family will be in Germany soon to watch USA vs. Italy. His son, my nephew, plays soccer for the University of South Carolina (yay!).

England didn't look so hot today I guess they'll play conservative until Rooney gets back. I must say, they sure have the coolest looking jerseys. I wonder where I can get one around OC...
