I think John's comment is pretty funny, I never thought of it but it does look like half a speculum gizmo'd up with some stuff to hang off a guitar.

I love Bigsbys, I find that they stay in tune well and are a gas to play. I have one on my G&L ASAT Special semihollow and it is a terrific guitar.

The first time I saw a Bigsby on the 325V59 that was the image I had, just the same kind of sculptural casting and handle form. (Not sure, but I think they're all plastic and disposable now.)

By the way, your G & L will be happier if you'd warm up the Bigsby in your hand a bit before using it.

All of my Bigsby's are cast metal and certainly NOT disposable.
