Dean, for me the Hi-Gains are a first cousin to P-90's. They're not the same, however both pickups have a meaty tone, but with definition. I like that. Good luck!

Good question Dean & one that is quite relevent to me, as on Saturday night, the Rampant Carnivores performed their very first blues number. We had run out of songs & on the third encore, we decided to 'make up' a slow blues number in the classic style....believe me, the higains on my 340 have every ounce of blues tone that you could want.

Interestingly enough (or not), although I am very much a rock player, my gtr heroes from an early age, are Roy Buchannon, Buddy Guy & Robert Cray. As a result I play all my solos in a blues minor key style, even when playing in a major key....seems to work OK!

Many thanks guys. I think I'll try the Hi-gains first. They will mount without routing (the P90s would require routing) and as a bonus are a less costly experiment than the P90s. As I move along with the project I'll post it to The Others. I have a solid body "mule" I'll move them to, should the archtop project not work out.

As far as the amps you use, a truer statement is hard to find. We play such varied styles in our sets that all those great amps are just not easily feasible. I use the Valvetronix AD120 head to get pretty close to the requisite golden amp tones. The 350s toasters are phenomenal pickups and cut through a muddy mix both clean and distorted, and I love them. But they just miss the mark a bit for that "blues zone" tone, and the V'x amp can't quite compensate that much.
