On the Sgt Pepper Live DVD, Tom has a 4001 or 4003 next to his amp all the way through the show.

I can't even comprehend the kind of hand strength someone has to have to play a 12 string bass.

Played 12 as my main bass for most of the 90s. If your bass is set up properly its not that tough.
