Just held the one at Guitarville a couple of days ago.
It's VERY clean! A time capsule. A bit spendy tho, since I know what the seller paid for it (it's on consignment...)
It's Dec 72 BTW (LL****)

True, but you also wouldn't have checker binding or pearly inlays, and even with all those basses you won't have the same sound (assuming that the bass you're talking about has a horseshoe).
$5K doesn't even begin to get you into the more esoteric or boutique basses. Unfortunately, the value of those decreases significantly on the used market, unlike many of these Rics.

If I had the money, I would gig that baby till the cows come home. The nicer the bass... the more I want to play it live. You buy pure-bread race horses to run... not sit in a stable.
"... and I wouldn't have a bass where the tuners fall apart and the fretboard can pop off from a truss rod adjustment and the neck can warp from round wound strings ..."
Mine holds tune just fine, and the neck is the best I have ever played on any bass. Has not needed adjustment in over 20 years... rotosound roundwounds on it the entire time (though I went for elixir coated roundwounds as an experiment and liked the results).

It's a really cool bass, but have 72's gone to the $5000 mark yet?
I thought we were all agape at $3500 for one a few months back...
Jeff, you only put these down 'cause you couldn't make 'em 5 strings....
