Shielding the cavities and pickguard rendered my 4003 SO QUIET. Something to consider.

Alembic pickups have remarkable sensitivity. Using relatively low-output coils and preamping right at the source can produce an amazingly clear, clean sounds that are loaded with harmonics. Despite that, Alembics can also growl when provoked. Image

I will not buy any Ric basses of the old 4001 and early 4003 design with the old truss rod design ... right now my oldest is a 1986 2030 ... and I actually prefer 1990 and later because the pickups are made better and for a 4003 I like the 1997 and later because the body and headstock is shaped like the 60's basses ... and the 2006 4003s are even better because they have walnut headwings ...

What's with the truss rod on it?

Is that an old-style TRC or a fake?

It looks like a re-issue lucite.

Way too short for a reissue.

Not only that, the reisuues have the Made In USA parallel to the name.

rubber hat knobs? The classic Alembic knobs are Raytheons;I bought some for projects I had years ago. Not rubber; just flat black color.

Really? Hmmm . . . they look like they're made of rubber, or some soft, grippy material like that. Having never played an Alembic, I'm going on pictures only. The old Tobias basses had rubber knobs for a while, though.

I have a Jazz Bass with Alembic knobs and they are not rubber, like Don said.

I like it, but it needs 24 frets...

Did anybody here happen to win this bass? I thought it was kind of cool and wondered how it would play.

It is kind of cool.

Interesting though that it sold for around $400.00 less than the last time I saw it sell on ebay...which was around 2 years ago.

It sold to David (Dwmark) at the Alembic Club forum.

Interestingly it has a split neck - no skunk stripe but the neck-through is two pieces of wood. Never saw that before.
