Paul's right - these microchips have no power source. They need the scanner in close proximity of them to generate an electro-magnetic field, which powers the chip to be read.

Yes, the chips in animals and I assume guitars would need a scanner. I've scanned many a dog and cat.
I'm for the technology of "lo-jacks" for people.
Say a marine in Iraq is captured. We'd know where he was being hidden and possibly the bad guy's HQ's.

These chips have very limited range or more correctly, the scanners do. The type of chips that are affordable for a guitar (or an animal) have a range less than a foot. This outfit
Snagg, has offered them for years with quite limited success, mainly because so few places actually have the scanners to read them.
