Hey Glenn,
I had a gig in Chicago that same day it hit 107. We were playing the Double Door, warming up for the Verve Pipe. Their van broke down due to the heat on their way from Ohio and they were so late that we didn't get a chance to sound check. Nice guys though. The air conditioning at the DD couldn't keep up and pics from that gig show us soaking wet.
Also have pics of that blizzard of '79.
Cheers,
Bill

It's scorching out here in Southern California right now, already have our first wildfire of the season! Temp at my house at 8:30 is a refreshing 90 degrees. The drone of the ac's from other houses is non-stop... Too much energy wasted I think, gotta get used to it.
My workers are sweating buckets and have towels wrapped around their heads these days because the inside of the factory feels like a sauna.
Fair warning to all those planning on attending the 75th-- August and September are our hottest months!

For the past several days it has been over 90 degrees here, with unbearably high humidity....and to make things even worse, for the last two days there have been forest fires raging about 50 miles "up the Trail" from here, and the smoke is hanging heavily in the air, with little white bits of ash coming down like a light snowfall....Absolutely miserable, and the smoke smell has been giving me a headache.... fortunately today was not quite as hot--I think it only got to about 85, which is still plenty warm for the North Shore of Lake Superior!
"Once I've held and played the best, baby, I won't settle for less!"
Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, Melbourne is experiencing a rather cold spell, with the daytime temperature today reaching about 50 degrees F. Anyone wanna swap?

Like Paul, my oldest brother left Chgo in Oct. of '79 for Santa Monica. I think he said standing in the wind on the Chgo L platforms while empty CTA trains blew past his stop (supposedly to make up time because they were late) was the last straw.
That winter was extraordinarily cold in addition to the five feet of snow that never seemed to melt. It is said it caused a migration from IL, at least a few others in addition to Paul and my Bro. I started Driver's Ed that Jan., with 12 foot snowbanks at every intersection, could not see cars coming the other way with no exceptions.
Bill, I think the night you were playing I saw some punk bands at the Fireside Bowl, which was not air conditioned. One of the bands said they were on their "heat emergency tour" and were offering beer bongs from the stage. A lot of the takers looked underage and the band was not checking IDs. That heat was as extreme as the cold in '79. Our show was a night or two later and it was not much cooler, just wicked heat.
Bob is right, it's been hot in NYC, especially the subways...nothing unusual there. But we had a storm last night, which I got caught in, and it's much better today.
I'll expect heat in LA next month. It can be wicked there too thru Oct. of course. Same here, though the humidity tends to drop out in Sept. In Chicago, last week of August usually, it's like a switching is flicked and the nights start getting cool rapidly.

Saw something on PBS last night that made me laugh. Scientists were in Alaska studying the effects of global warming on the wildlife such as polar bears, whales, etc. One scientist was interviewing an elderly Inuit about the climate change. The older native said he actually enjoyed global warming. Shocked, the scientist asked him, "Why?" "Because it's warmer," was the reply.
