I'm not positive but I think the cap was removed around or at the same time as the rods were changed. JH took over sometime in 84 and I believe the changes were instituted by him.

Here is an example of an early 4003. This one was to be converted to an 8 string but the previous owner decided to sell it before it was completed. I plan to restore it to its original configuration.
This is how the body-end adjusters looked when applied to the old style rod system.
The headstock is particularly interesting. I suppose a lot of Rick players would think this was a copy when they pulled the TRC off to inspect the rods for the first time. It sure surprised me.

The routes in the headstock are there to remove and replace the rods for inspection and repair.

Yes, it is much easier taking them at the head than the body.

Wow! More unreal info and pics. This place continues to amaze. Never had a 4003 apart to see this configuration for myself.

You will really like Paul Boyer's book then. He plans to include lots of information like that.

Gotta wait at least another year. Still in the process of gathering. At this point, my target to submit it to Hal Leonard Pub. is summer of 2007 for possible inclusion in their Fall 2007 catalog, which would mean probably spring 2008 issue. Nothing set in stone, no contract signed, no commitments, no promises . . . .

Paul,if you you can get the inside scoop on forthcoming RIC models in your book, it's publication might coincide with the relase of the actual guitars!

I hope to have John Hall's cooperation, but he's asked me to hold off until the end of this anniversary year. So I plan to ask his help on the historical photo end of things, and to be one of the "fact checkers" as the book progresses. I want to include the 50 years of the Rickenbacker bass history, and that's part of the working title, but if there is new stuff that can be included, you'll bet it will be in there.

Ted - two really great posts of info I have not seen before - heard descriptions but no pics or detail depth like you posted here. Thank you.
Paul - we're all waiting for the release!
