Dane: ... nope ... sorry ... but I have a couple of old Move albums ... when they lost their bass player Roy Wood took it up and had an interesting distorted biting aggressive tone ...

I remember in the early 70s I played one of the 60s fender 5 string basses ... tuned BEADG ... it had flats and I ran it into an acoustic 2x15 bass amp ... I turned the bass and treble up to 10 and it had a similar sound to Roy Wood playing bass ...

I've always loved the first part of Band on the Run. I'd also say Silly Love Songs. For my third, I'll say Mrs. Vandebilt, which is two songs from Band on the Run. I've heard that album was recorded with a fender. Of course, The live Wings Over America was the Rick.

The Ballad of John and Yoko (Lennon on the Hofner?)
Anything Chuck Rainey did on the Steeley Dan Albums.
Hip-hug-her: Booker T and The MG's, Duck Dunn on bass.
The bass on When a Man Loves a woman Percy Sledge (great great drummer too.)
Joey Spaminato, (of NRBQ) Hail Hail Rock n roll, Chuck Berry 60th birthday concert, Dan Electro long horn, flats and an SVT sounds exactly like an upright with his technique, also great great drummer on that one too. If you haven't gotten this CD it's the best Chuck Berry you'll ever see.

Miles Davis - "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" - Dave Holland & Harvey Brooks
Free - "Mr. Big" - Andy Fraser (I assume it's flatwounds)
James Brown - "Cold Sweat" - Bernard Odum (I think?)
The Bootsy w/James Brown stuff is amazing too, of course, and there are other great tunes from that era, but I think "Cold Sweat" is the penultimate one.

Duck Dunn.....I was given my user name by a friend who knew I was a Duck Dunn fan . My friend also had a record with a song about an upright bass that went "zoom zoom zoom " hence...Zoomduck . Let us not forget David Hood with the Staple Singers . The bass line to James Browns " Lickin Stick " is in my head forever . Great stuff from everybody ,as usual on this forum !

But seriously, back to the thread drift...Jeff, I saw Wizzard in Phoenix in '74...outrageous...mindblowing and louder than f***...somewhere between Beefheart and George Clinton, except for with, like, a cannibalistic Druid for a frontman...Roy played tenor and bass saxes all night and tore the roof off...okay, back to flatwounds...
