The 4000 is a great bass, I used to have a neck thru one which I still wish I had, and I'm finding that I use mostly the horseshoe, uncapped on my 4001c64, I also flip between my mexi 60's Jazz, which I also love the tone of, also most of the early Anne Murray records are a 4000...R

My Jazz bass is a fretless, and I also souped it up with some Seymour Duncan hot stacks...
Nothing wrong with a 4000.
They'll have plenty of boom and cut through like a knife. Kind of wish RIC still made them...

i was way side tracked from actually playing bass. i tried to take up guitar about 6 months ago or so. i tried so hard but couldnt get it. so i grabed my Ric and began to play and knew trying to play guitar was a msitake. i love bass and the ric.
the P/J special I checked out was cool on some level but nothing feels right in my hands like the ric

Butt... it's related...
I picked up a Fdenre Jzaz fretless today at the Clearwater GC for $250. An unusually low price for that place. Near mint, except one belt buckle ding on the back. And it came with straplocks and a nice Fdenre strap. Straight neck, sounds great. The guys at the store (who know me by now) were kind of bummed, but jovial. They had just gotten it in and funployees aren't allowed to buy for 30 days. Also got a used BassBalls pedal which is really freaky. I am diggin it.
PS: The misspellngs are on purpose, yes.

Bob, they sound more gutsy, more primal, more raw and more in your face. The pickups are very strong and spikey in output. Leo Fender got it right the first time. Problem is the old amps at the time could not handle the output signal, lots o blasted speakers- they went with the split pup to minimise repairs the urban legend goes. But with modern amps (especially my 4x10 apmeg cab and head) they sound and record clear and full in sound.
To get back on topic, My guess is, they are or would be close to a 4000 in sound. The flower bass in my profile certainly can clank with either of my Ricks (but then it has Roto swing bass rounds, a SD 1/4 pup and a maple neck with helps a lot). The '51 has the stock pickup (real hot) TI Flats and a 4 saddle bridge replacement. It sounds clacky or real full and greasy. It's a very versatile rock bass (though YYZ doesn;t sound too good on it!)
While I like Precisions, and Rickenbackers, the true single coil P's are my favorite.
