hmm...i'm concerned when looking at the picture showing the chip. the paint around the strap 'peg' is very uneven. as in, over sprayed around the peg, then under prayed further out. plus, the paint job (especially on the headstock) looks 'dusty'. that is, painted in an environment not properly cleaned/ventilated for pro. painting (not a booth), so dust accumulates on the wet paint and gets locked in.

what i'm saying, is i personally do not believe this is the factory finish paint, so i would cast serious doubt on the binding too.

That binding doesn't look stock to me.

Faker...

4002's have a black outer binding strip. The one on eBay has a white outer strip. Maybe this causes them to look different.

OK, so I too counted the black and white checks in the binding of my Shadow on the length of the jack plate. 23 black ones and 22 white bits - exactly like the bass on eBay.

I assume John Hall has the answer... VH 2179 - real, fake or modded?

I counted the checks on all three of my 73's and they are all in the 25 range, something does look funny about that binding. And that jack plate looks kind of fresh for a bass that old.

Maybe the binding changed in the mid 70's. Strange that my '72 and Marks' 73's have about 25 and Ilans 22 - 23. also my check looks kind of more home made than the one on ebay.

Any one with a forum calendar can check out my check on the August page. Before anyone says, I know my pickguard is not stock...

I counted my '73 and my Shadow and the binding is different. The 73 is in the 25 range, the 86 Shadow is in the 22-23 range.

Looks like the TRC is wider than the neck, and not parallel at the nut.

Notice no pictures of the back that would possibly show a bolt on neck.

My guess is white re-spray faker all the way.

I think the marks around the strap button near the chip are wear marks from a strap, I've had them just like that. I had an early 80's white/black trim 4001 that looked exactly like that one except it had normal binding, was even the same shade of yellow. I think it's real but would like to be able to investigate it. I would ask a lot of questions if I were interested. You can see the line from the binding in the photo near the strap button also.

Who sells a bass and doesn't take a picture of the back? That makes me wonder. And his feedback number is three, that doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. And would anybody in their right mind sell a real rick in a faker case? Dude, if you're lurking, you know what you need to do, Git-R-done!

There's something odd about the picture of the bottom of the body. It looks like the edge of the tailpiece overhangs the edge of the body. Maybe it's just the angle of the photo?

I asked for more and better pics but still no response.

I just noticed that we (actually Bob Atherton) invented the "checks-per-jack plate" (CPJP) measurement. "What's the CPJP?" - "Mine is 25." - "Oh, must be 70's or earlier." - "Yeah, they changed to bigger bits in the 80's." - "They don't make them like they used to any more. I really liked the smaller checks. The 11% increase is really noticeable." - "Sure is."

unquestionably...the bridge is hanging out OVER the body........by a country mile............and that TRC is NOT centered........also, the bottom corners of the TRC are much more rounded than the TRC on my RIC......
