At the risk of sounding unoriginal. welcome Stu! A few warnings are in order here. This place will never cease to amaze you, and you will find yourself parked here almost constantly. Second, you will soon feel the need to have just one more Rick. Then just another. Then maybe just one more. But you're in good hands here because we'll support you 100%, either talking you into it or talking you out of it so WE can buy it! Kidding of course, but the bottom line is, you found the rest of us, and this is THE place.

Wow. Thanks for all the warm welcoming posts. I recognize a name or two from other forums, but I guesss the reason I haven't seen them on those forums is because they hang here all the time now! I can see why.
*Without the cap you'll find your rick is far more versatile in tone than you think .*
Jeffery, I couldn't agree more. When I had the bass in the shop, I had them do the cap mod. I have seen pro and con on the subject in the brief while I've been here, but it seemed worth doing, as it was easily reversible. Wow! What a difference. I remember blowing the front pickup on my '73 one night not long afer I got it, and having to finish the night on one pickup. It's something I would not want to do again. But this '78, with the bridge pickup suitably unleashed, really grinds nicely now. I could easily do the night on the bridge pickup if I had to. And there is indeed a world of adjustment now in the tone controls So far, it seems to sound best with the front pickup backed off ever so slightly; really seems to open up the upper mids and highs without losing the low end.
And Fran Festa, you are so right. I'm already plotting my next Rick (gotta have one with rounds and one with flats, right?). Speaking of flats, I'm something of a string junkie and have experimented with a few brands of flats. I've had good results with TI flats, but I also like GHS flats and have had great results with LaBella tapewounds on a couple of basses. What do you flats fans like on your Ricks? I've also heard great things about Pyramid flats really helping nail the Macca Wings tone. Any thoughts/ideas welcome.
And thanks again all for the warm welcome. I'm going to check out a few threads and pick your collective brains a bit more.
By the way, is there an FAQ here? I didn't see one, but maybe I need to look a little harder.

There is one FAQ here, Stu:
"What should my next Rick be?"

Regarding flats, I too like the TIs, but many here prefer the DAddario Chromes. Lately though, I lucked into some original new old stock 70s R1ckenbacker (Maxima) flats, and have really found heaven. Made my '78 sound just like it did in the 70s when it was born.

Welcome!....
...and do I hear the rumblings of the dreaded R.A.S. in the distance?...

Wecome Stu! (Where have I heard that before?)
I may have been an instigator in the desire for Chromes. I have them on all of my Rick basses.
