It's wired the same as the 5th knob on a 4005. Neck pickup roll-off.

I like the fifth knob. My 4080 has one but in my bonding with the 4005 project I have come appreciate the level of control it offers.

Besides that, the controls are a completely different arrangement than a standard 4000 series bass. The upper controls are bridge tone rear, bridge volume front. Lower controls are neck tone in rear, neck volume in front. The selector switch is up for bridge pickup and down for neck. This arrangement made more sence to me.

Yeah, next time I'm in my 4003 that's how I will wire it - to me more intuitive - bass/low/down; treble/high/up. Thats how I wired the 4004C when I had to replace the broken switch.

Whoa! Dane, at first I thought it was a photoshop picture, but what the??? ..... If this has been described before, I must have missed it. What is the story on it? (Shirley you didn't cut a CS... and don't....). And where did you find the '67-ish treble pickup surround? Amazing job!

There is a real Rick under there. It is a highly customized 4003 and it plays superbly. Kenny Howes used it to play Helter Skelter at the end of the 75th Anniversary Confluence. Very cool.

Ya,Kenny broke it in right on that tune. Adding to what Ted said...It was my tribute to Mr.Squire and the combination of two basses I've always liked, his RM1999 and the prototype 4008 he got in the early 70's. The early style pickup surround was made from an old Ricky lap steel surround by fellow forumite, Mark Walker. Thanks for the compliments Dave and Ted.
Hey Ted, do you still want the pattern for the headstock? I made copies weeks ago but haven't been able to get to the post office lately. If so, e-mail me address.
