Yes, nut files are the way to go. They have the rounded edge needed for proper nut filing. Anything else will leave a square slot- no good.
I have an 8 -piece set that goes from .010 to .050 and that works fine. You just rock the file in the slot a bit as you are cutting, if you need a slightly larger slot than corresponds to a file in your set. For example, you use a .017 file for a .020 slot and rock the file side to side as you cut the slot to widen it a bit.

I have heard bad things about the product on EBay which is made by kerfing a set of feeler gauges.
