Back in the mid-nineties I decided to refinish my beat-up 1976 4001 (originally Burgundyglo) in a solid color (white) because the wood pattern wasn't particularly pleasant to look at, otherwise I would have settled for Mapleglo.

I'll be stripping it down pretty soon. A woodworking friend of mine wants to put a flame koa laminate top on it. Definitely would be different. I can't do any natural or transparent finishes as is because of the extra routing. I'm just not sure a Rick would lend itself to exotic woods with a large portion of the top being covered with the pickguard and mounting ring...Actually (I hope this isn't sacrilege), I was thinking of Lake Placid Blue with white binding. Don't shoot, it's just one of my favorites and I'd like something different. Oh, by the way, the finish looks worse than the pictures show.

Bob: id go for the simple approach, simply refinishing it in a nice solid colour. Lake placid blue would look great.
It will be great to see pics of it if/when its done up.

How about a nice cream color like Maurice gibbs' old Rickenbackers.
