In Roman numerals, it would be "MDC" anyway.

I see it's been a while since junior high school for some of us.

Yes, MDC is 1600. 1000 + 500 + 100

But the letters could also be arranged as MCD which is 1400. 1000 + 500 - 100

End of off-topic I guess.

IIRC, one could use a letter before another as a subtractor, e.g. 95 could be written as LXXXXV (50+10+10+10+10+5), VC (-5+100), or LXLV (50-10+50+5).
