A Rickenbacker 330/360/620 6-string will certainly "do" for lead work. Objectively, the narrow string spacing and slim neck can hinder Clapton style string bending. This same "Restrictive" neck and string spacing can be a blessing for chording, though! Viewed coldly and objectively, Strats, Teles,335's and LP's are probably "better" for modern lead style work-especially if you want to look and sound like everyone else, LOL.
I used a little JG 325 for lead in a C&W group in my undergrad days at LSU some 20 years ago. It was my back-up, in all honesty. I employed a Strat and sometimes and old Epi Casino as well, but the little Ricky got as much playing time as anything else. Perfect for "Green River", btw.
Using my little black Ricky 325, I had my own look and tone for stuff like "Tiger by The Tail". Go ahead, use a Ricky for lead; they're a ball!

PS: Live I never broke a string with my little semi-hollow Rick, unlike my solidbody Strat!
