Scott, is your '68 4000 neck through? I purchased a '68 new in '69 (now long gone) and I can't remember if it was neck through or set neck. Mine had a horseshoe pickup.

I think all of the 4000 and 4001 basses from the 60s were neck through ...

Yep. Neck thru. It doesn't look like it ever had a horseshoe but it has the larger surround. Was that when the transition started?

Thanks Scott. I guess that I am curious as to when they changed. Here are a couple shots of me with the bass in 1969.

Although it's hard to see in those pics it has the larger pickup ring with the tail.
