I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to play Gibsons or Fenders, nor do I think you should push him so hard to like one, some people just can't. I play an SG, but do I have a cliche'd tone everyone has heard before? hardly, I sound terrible on ANYTHING I play and that's the truth! In extreme circumstances, I've seen guitarists quit bands because of little things like this. great player with other guitar? or bad player who will o whatever you want. Options A and B

I mean honestly - an Ibanez? I've never met anyone who plays an Ibanez who would consider a Rickenbacker. Those people are just plain different.

Well, I must be different then.
I am the proud owner of three Ibanez instruments and three Rickenbackers. And I love 'em all. (Well, I'll love the 330DCM a little more, soon I hope.)

Mark, you're going to have to educate me on the Ibanez thing. When I hear Ibanez, I always think of the Steve Vai models with the graphics, 7 strings, handles and other things. Feel free to enlighten me...although I'll still think you're different!

David, I agree 100%. I've always stated it's the player and not the instrument.
On sort of a turn around on the quote about how good a coach Bear Bryant was (he can take his and beat yours and could take yours and beat his). A great musician playing on a piece of **** is still going to sound like a great player.

Kelly, I am not an expert on Ibanez. But they are MUCH more than that Steve Vai thing. They have a VERY large product line, that you can check out at:

I have made this claim before and I'll repeat it here. I think they are the best made, best VALUE of all the Asian brands.

And I would put it up against a Gibson ES335 any day for LESS than ONE-TENTH the price.

I'd say if you put this argument on the ibanez forum site(if there is one),you'd get a completely different view!

Ibanez does make some very nice guitars. They're good quality & not too expensive. The jazz type of guitars are particularly nice for someone who can't afford a Gibson.
I've always heard lots of good remarks about them.

If he plays a JS model, it is MADE for lead playing, no offense to the Rickenbrothers in the audience, but the JS is a different beast altogether. Does his have a tremelo?

I have this Ibanez..... a limited release RGT-3020FMDS. Very nice and awesome tonal range but I hardly touch it. For some reason I always pick up a Rick in preference!!

A simple story... often happens.
A Mom bought her Daughter a checkered jacket. It was of great quality, and it fit the young girl, and looked great on her, and it matched her Mom's checkered coat. But after trying it on, the girl refused to put it on anymore, she preferred her old denim jacket, saying it's too warm for the new jacket. It happened a few times, and in the end Mom asked: "What's wrong with that jacket? You think it doesn't look good on you?" - "No, it looks fine on me, Mom." - "Maybe you don't like the color, or the material, or something?" - "No, Mom, everything's fine with the color & material." - "So, what's wrong with that jacket, my dear?" - "It just doesn't feel right."
I have no experience with Ibanez, to be true. That's just, no matter how good a certain instrument/brand of instruments is, how great it plays & how good is the quality, it cannot be everybody's cup of tea. Imho.

Every day I hear guitarists getting great sounds out of guitars that I am convinced hate me. SG's threaten to break my fingers and kneecaps and Les Pauls try to crush my vertebra- that's even before I put them on. I owned a bunch of Kramer and Ibanez hammerhead rock'n'roll machines in the eighties and nineties. I kept buying more expensive pickups to put in the Ibanez guitars and electronics, etc., but I could never get them to sound good to me through the same equipment that my other guitars sounded good through.

Finally, I figured out that some guitars just don't like me. I can't blame the guitar or the company, but clearly my Ibanez git fiddles didn't feel the way about me that any of my Ricks do. I honestly feel that the people who owned them after I did were very happy with them- especially the guy who got the high end one with 6 extra pickups that I threw in.

Everyone has 'their own thing'. With a lot of us here (obviously) it's Ricks.
The guitarist in my band loves Ibanez guitars, though he sounds fantastic playing anything. He just finds them to be most comfortable, & he's had a ton of different guitars.

I'm most comfortable playing Strats, but I like a lot of others, & for basses it's RIC all the way.
I hate playing anything else.

Easiest way (imo): buy a Rick model you think he'll like. Then you have 2 possibilities:
he likes the instrument, it becomes his main player, and he compensates the money you've spent on it; he doesn't like the instrument, refuses to play it — and in that case, you add one more Rick to your collection.
