Your welcome! I am not sure why I felt I had to state my bona fides!

Bryce, you mention having to touch metal to get rid of the hum. Somewhere you either have a signal wire missing or a ground wire not connected or missing or touching a signal point.
Use Joey's 4001 drawing:

thank you John.
i just saw that diagram in another post; very helpful.
fortunately i have a couple other stock 4001's to compare against.
the wiring and soldering is a little messy on this one as someone had been in there to bypass the .0047 and replace the stock .047s.
when i have the time, i'll clean it all up; hopefully that solves the issue.
if i need to replace any wires, what gauge should i use?
thanks again

22 ga. hookup wire should be fine. Use the same size RIC does.
Check for a missing ground though, because of the hum and elimination touching metal. Make sure the tailpiece is still grounded.

sorry John, are you saying 22 ga. what Ric uses? or, to confirm that it is in fact 22 ga.?
thanks

It was pretty late and I was tired. First choice would be the same as RIC uses. Second choice would be 22 ga. Not sure what gauge the factory uses though.

completely re-wired the harness as it was pretty messy from when the previous owner replaced the .047's and bypassed the .0047. that should solve the ground issue.
the main problem ended-up being the treble pup after all...seems to be temperamental, it was working great for Sergio after replacing the re wire, but no reading when it got back here. so off it goes back to Portugal to have the master-winder do his thing.

Glad you got it sorted out, Bryce. Let us know how it sounds when it has a good treble pickup once again.

Well, not the optimal solution but at least you know what the problem was and also that a solution is in the works. AND you have new wiring that you know is correct.
You should be able to moonlight as a bass tech by now!
