Vince Gallo was the person who bought my 1970 4001 just a week ago. He asked what I wanted for it. I gave him a pretty high price, which he agreed too without hesitation. Within an hour a very pretty girl ( a 10 ), who works for him I think, showed up at my place with cash, she paid me and took the bass. She said she was to fly to LA later that day to bring it to him. The next day he called me to thank me for the bass. A few days ago I sent him the link to the 68 for sale in Germany as I thought he might want to get that one too. He called me to thank me for the tip but explained that already owning ten 100% original 1968 4001’s in fire glow made him less motivated to own a 68 4001 fire glow that had issues. Also he said he knew there was a forum guy who really wanted the bass and he felt he should give someone else a chance to win it as long as they made a decent bid.

Okay, so Vince has cornered the market on those, now we REALLY need Rickenbacker to produce a 4001v68!

I agree, I'm ready for a V68....but ya know I was just thinking(prepare yourself for extreme gas pains)....You could get a new mapleglo 4003 with the thin neck and the walnut headstock wings....have Dale F. do the checkered binding and inlays....add the appropriate pick guard and toaster, and you have cap or no cap in the new pull switch. Very obtainable....git-R-done....

This pic always gives me gas for a new mapleglo, even though I prefer 4004's now.

Thanks, Jose, for the explanation, that's what I figured - that Vince really did not want it that badly. I just knew about the 68 he bought last August, didn't know about the others.

What strikes me as odd, however, is that if he reads the Forum, then he must have read about the tragedy of my 21-fretter early March 1971 KC012 being stolen in 1986, and my heartbreak over it, and my passion now to replace it with as identical a 21-fretter as I can find.

You would think therefore that he would have let me have a chance at yours, or perhaps pointed me towards one that he knew about. Oh well, maybe he will read this post and we will then see where his heart is.

If you do not mind my asking, what did he pay for your 21-fretter, Jose? If you prefer, of course my private email address is <[email protected]>

I favour a late '72 4001FG with CPS and CB over the '68, as in terms of the weight the '72 is lighter and I can remove the bridge PU cover to fingerplay just at that spot. Also it has the nice skunk stripe! I would sell all my current basses (1997 4003FG, 2004 4004Cii/TR with walnut wings, 5-String P-Bass Fender Squire Protone with EMG electronics)to get a nice one of this model (that might come up to 3500US$). But there is simply no offer here in Germany. IMHO there should be at least one of a kind here in the hands of a German forumite!?

The 68, undoubtedly, to a collector. It will have significantly more monetary value. To me, who is not a collector but a player, the 21-fretter would have the most emotional and "player" value, and solely if it played and felt just like my long-lost March 71 KC012... Ahh, I remember her well!
