Yup it is a 4003 made in June of 82, and yes make sure you take the tension off the neck as you tighten the nuts, if they are on all the way, try some washers to get some more thread for the nuts. Let us know how it comes out, BTW these are nice basses, the early 80's 4003's are not that common anymore, especially the S's. Once you get the truss rods set they should stay, only requiring minor adjustments from then on, if the neck is badly bowed, don't force it, it will straighten out, may take some time, repeated times tightening the nuts, that's all. Wait a few days or weeks and tighten again, and so on.
A=1961 up until Z=1986 1st letter, 2nd letter, a=Jan. and so on. they changed their method of dating in 1987.
If that is an S you should consider converting it back to a 4003, it would be hard to find the two piece pickguard though, but they can be found. put new high gains in it, remove the cap from the treble control to the switch, you'll have a great modern sounding bass, and fairly rare at the same time.
