I'm with you, Jeff... they're not graceful at all.
Peter's Cii headstock really looks great! Very much like a '60s headstock.

Jeff you are right, the A and D tuners of the head stock of my 1974 4001FG actually look a kind of cross-eyed!
Maybe that's why it sounds so funky?

..not "Full" though you've cut the cresting wave!

The headstocks sem to have changed again recently... the late 90's early 00's have the nicer, longer headstock but the cresting wave is stubby. The C series have the correct (IMO) shape, backwards/upside down/whatever, but it's big and elegent, not big and stubby... I saw a pic of a new 4003 with the walnut wings, and the crest is no longer stubby, it's the c series sort of shape, teh right way around!

None of my Rick basses have the exact same shaped head or body. It's cool, keeps it interesting...and if someone asks me why I want one that looks just like the other one, I can honestly say that they do not!

Joey, you are so right. My two 5ers have such a different body shape...upper and lower horns much smaller on one, and overall size of the body on the one with the bigger horns is much smaller than the other (and lighter too.)

These two headstocks are identical in shape and size except for thickness.
'03 4004Cii - 3/4" thick
'67 4005WB - 5/8" thick

Are the current 4004 headstocks the same shape and size as the current 4003 headstocks?

I believe the 4004's are slightly longer than the 4003's, I just measured the Cii pictured above(I own it now) and it was exactly 8 1/2" from the nut to the tip of the wave. My 05 Laredo was also 8 1/2", there's enough room on those headstocks to put another tuner in the wave, kinda like hangin' ten with your "A" string. Don't know how long a 4003 headstock is, I sold all of mine.

My 2004 4003 is a larger headstock than on my 1995 4004C. The crest's valley is deeper on the 4004. I like it's whole proportions better.

I like them all - each one looks right to me. IMO any differences, or at least most, are pretty dang subtle.

An older thread i know, but I just thought I'd stick my '05 up, mainly because I like the 'negative' headstock wings!

Apologies, i'm not the greatest photographer but I hope she shines through.

My favourite shape, closely followed by the 60s shape and those later versions that best impersonate it.
This isn't the best shot of it to be honest...
