I have no expertise in spotting a refin on that CME, but here's some headstock photos of another 4005:

John, what year is that one? My '74 has a plexi TRC.

IN both basses above, headstock photos reveal a nice smooth radiused edge--a good sign of a competent and patient professional sanding job, such as is done at the factory--especially on the inside of the "cowlick".

Look at the same area of the CME bass. See the way it's been hacked about? The radius looks like it's been attacked with a penknife.

Also note the typical CV gloss on both Johns' basses. Missing in the CME instrument and instead, you can see open pores and a hazy semi-gloss finish.
“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”

I see what you mean Paul - the CME bass has a certain "matte" quality to it.

"John, what year is that one? "
From memory, its a '79.

"My '74 has a plexi TRC"
Mine too. And the red dots, checkered binding, and mono output.

Is this the same CME one that's been on sale for a while?
Remember, we all had gotten different price quotes on it?

I have lusted after a 4005 for ages but can't afford that kind of money. I do have one complaint about them though. The pickups are way too far apart from each other. When resting the thumb on the pup, you're either playing right beside the neck or the bridge.

By the way, there was another "RIC should re-introduce the 4005" thread over at the corporate site. And it was locked by the webmaster.

All threads there calling for the 4005 to come back get locked.

John has explained in detail the costs involved being impractical and also with the 4 year or so backlog, no time to take it on anyway. Search the RIC forums for the threads.

"How come?"

(my opinion)
Because it's ridiculous and annoying. JH has made it perfectly clear that it won't happen again due to tooling costs and weak sales when they were in the line up. Everybody swears up and down that they'd certainly buy one if Ric made it again but when the likely price of $4-5K+ is mentioned crickets start chirping. Yet more demands are made that Ric bring 'em back. They can be found used at that price so if people want them bad enough then they should just have some patience and be persistent instead of wasting their time badgering Ric about it.

I'd like to buy another 4004LK or get a Blackstar and a 4002 but they aren't being made anymore so if I want one I'll have to pony up for a used one....why be a PITA and constantly bother Ric about something that isn't going to happen.
