Great picture, R.C.! Give a kid a Ric and great things can happen.... I can't imagine how ecstatic I would be if I found one of those (or any Ric) at a garage sale! What a great find.... Am I also seeing the headstock of a kid-sized Fender in the photo?

These are the kids that aquire excellent taste in guitars at an early age, with the love and help from their uncles. How enviable!!!

Gary and R.C., kudos to you.

I remember how blown away I was when my dad bought me my first "real' guitar ('64 strat)...he's a lucky kid.

Looks like a '70's fender headstock back there.

Your dad bought you a '64 Strat? Do you still have it?

Way to go, Dad!

This was in '71 when it was just another old, used guitar. I did manage to sell it about 7 years ago for about 20 times what he paid for it (and it was in rough shape thanks to a friend I had loaned it to), and far less than it would go for today. Thanks again, dad!

That's great. I gave my daughter a Squier Strat for Christmas (obviously not nearly as cool); she wants to sell it already. Poof go my Partridge Family dreams...

R.C., the MP3 clip was not mine, it was Jeffrey's (who started the thread).

I'm working on one of my own (eventually a set), the intro to MTM; I have it recorded (660/12TP through my GX-40C+ Crate, miked with a Shure SM57)on my D16 but I have yet to burn it to CD. My plan is to record the same passage with each of my twelves for comparison. Further work will be to use the same guitar with different amps.

I have a 1966 Ryder 1000 FG that I bought from a San Diego pawn shop (an eBay item that didn't sell) a while back:

I thought about trading it with my great-niece for the 450, but decided that it probably was worth more, so I kept it. Although a child-sized guitar, it plays and sounds great. I also thought that a full-size guitar might be an incentive to keep her working at it! That's the disadvantage of being 2000 miles away from the 'rest' of the family (I have a sister 80 miles away in San Diego), I can't help by giving her lessons.

Anyway, here's the picture of my great-niece with the 450 MG:

Note that she is holding it upside-down. And no, I don't want to hear any, "Well, what's wrong with that - Jimi played guitar like that..."!!!

Gary, I would never say anything like "Well, what's wrong with that...". Your niece would be right at home with any of my RICs. I'm a lefty.

And I did mean to say the Jeffrey nailed the sound. Sorry!

That is great, Gary.... I just love to see kids getting involved with music, especially Rics! Image
