Brian I really think that "Black Beauty" is the best looking 4004 out there.

Jeffrey- I ordered a Jetglo Laredo back in Oct/06 through Mike Parks and was quoted a one year to eighteen months wait. Several have turned up on ebay since then but I'm just going to wait, I've already paid in full for it. They really are one of the nicest basses out there that nobody knows about.

While there is some discussion on the 4004 I have a couple of questions/comments. I bought a new jetglo 4004L in late '05; it's a stunningly beautiful instrument and came with the neck pick-up adj. to the fretboard, like they used to be. My only complaint with this bass is that the neck seems a bit wide, especially when compared to my Blackshadow, which has a fast, thin neck. Did the neck get wider on the current models? Also, I'd like to seriously consider a volume, volume, tone set-up, which I see many of you do. Where do I get the parts for it or who would make such a modification? I'm in L.A.

You might check with Jeff Rath (Jwr2 above) on the VVT mod. He did that on both of my 4004s.
The 4004 neck has more taper so wider as you get closer to the body. It is a different design than the 4003 neck which has less taper.

I've got an 86' shadow that I picked up on e-bay a few years ago. Had no idea how rare it was, I bought it because it looked so dang cool-black on black with the checkered binding. I had sold a 79 4001 years and years ago and wanted to get a Ric back in my collection. I was pleasantly surprised at how great the neck is and how great it sounds. It was only after I got a hold of it that I starting reading the forums and found out there are only 50 or so in existence. A truely great instrument!

The 4004/4003 are about the same width at the nut, about 1 11/16". The 4004 widens to 2 1/2" at the 20th fret, the 4003 widens to 2 1/4" at the 20th fret. I'm not sure if RIC did this to be more F*nd*r like as a P-bass "B" neck is 1 5/8"- 2 1/2".
One great consequence of this design is you can fit five strings on a 4004 neck with a 2 1/2" spread at the bridge saddles, perfect for a nice compact five string that medium size hands will find very comfortable.
