hair saloons! .... yup, that explains it.
A little know (but well documented) fact is that Ringo was a 2nd cousin to Pete Shotton and once sat in with the early Quarrymen skiffle band. He can be see here in the background past John's left shoulder.

For you trivia buffs: While in Hamburg, John Paul and George purchased cowboy boots and matching hats from a store called "Hans Fruitenblaster Haberdashery" located a few blocks from the Kaiserkeller. The manager of the store, Samuel Perkins, had once worked for the Eptein family store in Liverpool and had been married to Ringo's aunt (they were divorced in 1958 but Samuel still maintained good relations with the Starkey family). If that isn't serendipity enough, it turns out that Samuel Perkins was a first cousin of Carl Perkins who Ringo (and the other Fabs) admired so much. Small world.
As we all know, Pete Best was canned in the summer of 1962. In this picture, taken the day after the firing (Pete did play for a couple more gigs before Ringo arrived), Pete can be seen showing the others exactly what he though of them.
