Peter, it's worth checking into, but I recall "things" hitting the fan at my house when my sister first played the Hendrix national anthem. It was an all out sacrilege at the time, akin to flag burning. My father sincerely thought Hendrix should be jailed for it. Just another battle in the war of the Generation Gap.

But I recall something or other to do with a previous rendition causing a commotion...was it Sophie Tucker? I'll look into it, but it had something to do with singing it differently, or making it fun, or something.

I am still here Roy, don't go to Vegas until the 25th April.
I chose Star Spangled Banner as the definitive moment also, before anyone commented on it. Of course it will go down well in the North East of England.By the way we are not all Geordies Roy. I am originally from London anyhow!

I can't find much positive to say about Woodstock(69). Not even much memorable music. What strikes me the most, is all the people gathered there, not being able to take care of themselves. Food, health.. In the end, totally dependant on the aid provided from the establishment (Armed Forces, Police etc.) And anti establishment/authority/warfare was a great part of the whole experiment/happening, wasn't it? Needless to say, I wasn't there, so my impression is based solely on the movie which I've seen several times.

Mark: How do you know it's bad unless you try it? After all, would you believe a hippie? By the way, I recall reading that The Who got "dosed" at Woodstock and it made Pete very angry. He had sworn off psychedelics after a terrible STP trip on the plane ride back from Monterey in '67. Apparently somebody spiked the drinks backstage at Woodstock. They had a long wait before their set and had to play in that condition. Yikes!

As they say, "never ever trust a hippie, especially when they say "Trust me"". Seriously, though, i haven't been to Woodstock, of course, but i've seen the movie, and there were a few funny moments there, like mud skating. And Joe Cocker with a guitar.

Iron Butterfly was scheduled to play Woodstock, but they demanded so many perks (private flight out to it, etc.) the promoters dumped them.

Mark: Yeah, they did okay. Was it Abby Hoffman or Allen Ginsburg that Pete almost beat to death with his SG? It's a well-known fact that no one is allowed to walk on stage when the The Who are playing. I've always enjoyed watching Pete play 'Young Man Blues' from his Woodstock performance.

Seriously though, i do not think there's a direct correlation between being a hippie (or punk, or anybody else, for that matter) and being untrustworthy. That's all show business, anyway...
Back to the topic, as far as i remember, CCR's performance wasn't included in official Woodstock release. Still, when there was a broadcast about Woodstock on a local radio station, the host played 3 (!) CCR's songs referring to them as "Woodstock stars". He must have been a huge CCR fan!
