I personally can't stand Jeff Lynne's style of production either. The same vocal setup and all the acoustic guitars muddy up everything to where there's no space on the track. It is distinctive, but not my cup of tea. It was a breath of fresh air when Tom Petty came out with Mary Jane's Last Dance and he didn't have Jeff Lynne produce it. It sounded way better to my ears.

What most everyone else has said about Lynne, pretentious and predictable.

Roy is holding George's 1957 Gretsch 6120 that he got from Norman's Rare Guitar in CA.

...and in the Best Decision Ever category, George Harrison for considering-- but ultimately deciding not to-- un-do Spector's All Things Must Pass production thirty years on...guess who the likely wingman probably would have been...
I'm sure Lynne is a great guy and a blast to hang around...maybe that was the problem with some artists relying on him so much-- I can't imagine why Harrison and Petty both wanted their own stuff to sound like Wilburys.

I don't know, maybe they like the production style?

To me, Lynne's production has always had a very thick, heavy-handed style much like Phil Spector's. Everything seems to be so layered as to be over-produced; it's one thing to be an autuer, but quite another to be a one-trick pony.

I've had the same feelings as most that have been expressed here, but I also think we are being too quick to poo-poo one of the top producers of modern pop music.

Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever and Highway Companion don't sound anything alike. Those albums don't sound ELO. Both produced by Lynne.
Same goes for Harrison's Brainwashed.
