Get rid of smoke smell?
Re: Get rid of smoke smell?
Serves me right for being a wise-arse. I bought a 79 4001 MG a fewmonths ago as a project and it will need serious lighter fluid treatment. I will keep everyone posted.
How did yours come out, Alisha?

Start smoking, the smell won't bother you after a while!leesh wrote:The 481 arrived today and it is quite a neat little guitar...but it absolutely reeks of cigarettes....I've never had this issue before.
Does anyone have any advice?
I hate it when that happens; I got a Mesa 1-15 cabinet a couple years ago that reeked.

My Ampeg SVT3-Pro will smell like an old bar ashtray after an hour of playing. Mojo, I guess.

only thing I would add is to take the pick guard off and wipe down the inside as much as possible as well. Also change strings (which you're probably doing anyway). Had the same issue with a used SG Faded I bought a while back--these things did the trick.
Congrats on the guitar BTW....this model continues to intrigue me. Just waiting for the rare moment when one pops up at the same time there's $$ in my wallet!

Re: Get rid of smoke smell?
The cheapest and easiest method I've ever used for getting smoke smell out of a guitar case was to stuff it full of newspapers, close the lid and leave it for a week or two. When I was first given this handy tip I reckoned it wouldn't work especially as the fur lining was quite thick but the papers absorb the smell quite effectively to my surprise.
(I presume this would also work on a hollowbody guitar, where you can't easily get lighter fluid to?)
Steve.
