"Nice wood, Woody! I like the maple with the bubinga fretboard too. How do you like the body contours vs a 4001/3?" thanks, john! the weight and shape are both great-i am a big fan of the 4000/4001s versions -i have owned 2 4001's and a 4002,and never cared for the sharp edge of the bindings,or for the bound necks, altho of course they sounded fantastic, esp.the 4002. what i really like about this one is: the body seems very compact, thin and contoured, while the neck is substantial feeling without being too big. the funny thing about this neck is instead of tapering near the headstock it actually gets somewhat wider and deeper-it seems like the low f,g,c are really phat-sounding,and it feels different, but not in a bad way...

also:re bubinga fretboard-this one is unfinshed, and contributes to a warmth of tone not usually associated with ricks. i mean, one usually thinks of them as being bright, articulate basses. (obama bass!) lol...sorry...

I really enjoy both my 4003 and 4004C basses, but as you stated they are different in those ways. My 4004C fretboard is maple and unfinished and I believe accounts for some of the warmth. Along with the HB1 pups and the walnut unfinished body. The tapered edge where your arm rests on the body when playing is really a nice feature - I too notice the bound hard edge of the 4001/3 bodies.
I have not noticed the neck towards the head changing wider and deeper - I'll have to look when I get home. I have pretty big hands so I haven't noticed.
Anyway, rock that bad puppie!
