I bought the bass and according to the serial number it was made in October of 1983.
It is indeed a 4003 and it has lots of finish checking. Seller did not put it in a box.
The case was taped up and that was it!
No harm done during shipping. It may be for sale.

Ben, I would need the tail piece only. Can swap with a real 4001 tailpiece?

I'll swap it for a split tailpiece from the early 70's...
Otherwise I'd like to keep it on the bass for resale purposes.

Any Ric with a split pickguard from the factory is an early to mid 80's 4003.

Yep, my newly-purchased 1982 fretless Rick has a split PG Image (arrived Friday from the UPS dude Image )

This is my first FL Rick, BTW, it is kinda cool!!
