A good kid-sized starter acoustic is the Baby Taylor. I picked one up used for $200 for my grand-nephew's next birthday (he'll be 7), and it plays and sounds very nice, yet is the right size for a young'n.

Here's older picture of my nephew at age 7.
He's now 16, 6'5", has five guitars, a bass, and a drum kit. Needless to say, he plays circles around me.
