Pardon my ignorance, but what's the difference between a 4001 and a 4001s?

Javier, the 4001 (and its replacement, the 4003) is the deluxe model with binding on the body and neck and "shark fin" or triangular position markers on the fretboard. The 4001S (and its replacements, the 4003S and the Vintage models 4001V63 and 4001C64) have no binding and simple dots for position markers. Below are examples of both; an '07 Amber Fireglo 4003 and a '97 Fireglo 4001V63.

Javier

You will also find "S" style basses that are labeled as a RM(Rose Morris) or RM 1999 (Rose Morris model 1999), and the 4001CS (Chris Squire signature model).

Just like this one:

Isn't that extra dot like having two belly buttons?

Yeah, it is odd, isn't it? For those wondering, the typical V63 shouldn't have a position-marker dot on the 19th fret. Don't know why, but mine does. Standard S models have it, so it was probably a fretboard made for an S and grabbed on the line by mistake. No biggie.

a bit late chiming in-i have a 74 4000 set-neck that i love. it has been strung with pyramids for 3 years, but i recently changed to dr sunbeams for a different sound. it sounds really good with both string types,I'm thinking of trying some rotosound tapes on it,but am not sure if the tuners will accomodate the large e string. mine has the huge open-back reverse tuning keys with the teeny posts....

Okay, while we're on that subject, does anyone know if an '82 4001S would be okay with Rotosounds? I'd like to set it up that way but unsure if the neck and fretboard would suffer, I've been using DR Highbeams with good results.

Anyone?
