My '87 4003 has a thin and fast neck. I love it! The '07 4003 DCM that I had was much thicker and ultimately I sold it because of that.

My 2004 4003 feels incredible as does my 86 4003 and my 79 4001.

I have two '87 4003S's and an '88 4003. Those three necks are substantially smaller in girth than my 2006 4003.
My late 80's Rick necks are very similar in girth to my 70's 4001's. I have 4001's from '73, '76, '77, '79 and '80. All of my late 70's(including the '80) Ricks have basically the same sweet neck.
My July '73 is surprisingly a little bigger than all of my late 70's necks but is still nice.

Owen, 10 to 1 you have a curved truss rod that has rotated 180 degrees and is causing the neck warp.

John - quite possibly! but the rod WILL NOT come out. the other one does. and trust me the repair guy (whos a friend and did all the work free) and myself spent a long time figuring out the best thing to do. It sets up perfectly now

Well good news here. I just yesterday got a brand spankin' new Midnight Blue 4003 (it's an 07 I got on 7-7-07), and I have to say I LOVE the new neck. It seems very similar to my 77 4001, if not narrower. I don't know exactly, but one thing is for sure, and that is that it's much narrower (profilewise) than my 04, which I sold today.
It needs a setup, which it will be getting this week, but all in all I'm quite happy. So now I have a 77 and an 07.
And the warranty card gets mailed tomorrow.
I think I'll put the warranty card in an envelope to make sure it gets there safely.
I'll post pics later. I love it! I loved my 04 jetglo, but the longer I played it the more I realized that the neck simply wasn't for me, and it wore out my hand, which is bad because I've been having hand problems lately. The 07 is much more comfortable to me.

I noticed that the TRC is different these days than it was on my old one. It lacks the angled edge and the "made in usa" part is no longer raised lettering. No big deal, just wondering why they changed it.
The only thing that bugs me is that the pick guard is a little warped, which I didn't notice until I got it home. But that's rather minor, so no biggie I guess.

Hey Gray, is that the one that was at Wade's in Milwaukee? Nice catch!

Paul, no, it wasn't. That one was gone by the time I got there. I'm having this one set up at Wade's, though.
Jeff, thanks, it's a great color, and the one I've really been after for a while now.

I took my new 4003 to get set up yesterday, and I'm wondering about putting a toaster at the neck (assuming I can find a toaster). I'm wondering how many people think this is a good idea. I know it would LOOK cool on an MID. Any ideas? What do you guys play with toastered basses? I'm in a band that plays contemporary-style rock as well as some classic-type stuff. Just trying to figure it out. Thanks for any input.
