Yes a bridge too far Rob I was overzealous probably, but actually there is a CD out called WDR mania which has 22 versions on it.

Only 2 of you given me your preference to date I'll leave it till Saturday then list who versions are by. I am also going to check out the original again on other CD's I have because original is there albeit perhaps a poor recording.

I'll try, too. All very subjective.

Thanks, Roy.... I got 2 correct! That equates to a D minus, so it's down to the back of the class for me!!

If #2 is the Ventures it is definitely a re-recording, I have the original 45 here and it sounds nothing like that. In fact in the original recording the first chord of the A, G, F, E run is an A major played by the rhythm guitar not a minor like all subsequent versions have. Even WDR 64 had a minor A.
Chet Atkins is even better than I thought.

I have to agree, Bob..... definitely not the original version.

I think a lot of the pioneers re-record their stuff as the originals are usually owned by the record company's and it is the only way they can make money from many of these classic recordings. I don't know if this is the case of course but that is the reason why you'll see so many bands re-recording their old hits.

Version 2 is definitely The Ventures taken from a CD called The Ventures Collection released in 1980, I have scoured the CD and cover with a magnifying glass even and nowhere does it state re-recording, but you guys know your stuff because I also have the original Walk Don't Run album on CD and Vinyl and just played them side by side and there is a marked difference I admit.

Ventures were always re-recording their hits but this CD states taken from original master, one assumes therefore original master of a re-recording.

There is one Ventures CD issued on Laserlight, a budget German CD Label, which has a picture of original lineup, well Mel Taylor on drums but that would be being pedantic, Howie Johnson was drummer only for a couple of singles, but this CD is terrible, keyboards take the lead on some tracks.

Here's a story that may amuse some, a while back I bought a CD, if CD is cheap I always check to see if it has the usual disclaimer on, you know the these tracks have been re-recorded to ensure the best sound possible, load of rubbish, but this CD didn't.

Got it home played first track and knew straight away re-recordings, took it back and asked for a refund, some young kid said "is it faulty?", "No" came my retort "these are re-recordings and not originals but it does not state that"

"Sorry we can only take back faulty goods" won't go into rest of conversation but a supervisor eventually called over and I was given a refund.

As I left the store no doubt "what a nutter" was said but matter of principle for me.

haha! I still think that WDR 64 was an out take too. Also watch out for: original artists.

Can anyone confirm that Jerry McGee, once a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, is also an ex-Venturer?! IF, one of the greatest crossovers in popular/rock music!

Certainly is Einar, he joined The Ventures in 68 till about 72, but rejoined them later.

As far as i know Nokie Edwards and Jerry McGee still sort of alternate in spells with group.
