For the sake of lovely basses everywhere (!!!) I'd better reiterate here I was a bassist in a hurry, and wanted an 8 string right then and there (NEVER take this attitude if you have more than a fortnight before the gig!!!!), AND most importantly it was a bass that was absolutely battered and ingrained with goodness knows what when I got it, and so I'm more than happy with the result - its now white! - since by total fluke its a fantastic player (for my pudding fingers, anyway!) and hey it entertained 2000 people a month ago so can't be toooo bad now its done.... (if push comes to shove I've also got a couple of proper ones anyway SO THERE!!!!!!!!)
I learned also that battered wood finish basses can be rejuvinated somewhat by steam ironing the dents - unless wood is actually missing this really helped this bass's final appearance. good luck if you alter an instrument anyway.
