Interesting - Friday is my anniversary here. The thing that stood out most about this forum to me, was the acceptance of new people. So many message boards beat you up when you first post.

I got an e-mail from the original ebay seller. I had actually bid on the thing. Funny thing is after I asked him if it was still for sale, he never got back to me.

It took a while to find this, and I only had a little more than a year to wade through! I couldn't even remember what I'd posted about.

Hi -
I'm new to the forum, this being my first post. I had a similar problem with my '97 325V59 bridge, in that one of the height adjustment screws stripped out as yours did. My bridge was also at an angle. I ordered a replacement bridge, and exchanged the saddles from the damaged bridge. This kept me from having to cut new slots. Of course, if you're going to change to a 12 saddle bridge, you won't be able to swap saddles.

"I'm an aging (54) rocker, and it's great to see this discussion group. I've got a 72 Rick 4001 that used to be Mapleglo, but I got it used and attempted to refinish it myself. I found out that strippers eat plastic, but was able to save the binding and position markers. I airbrushed a dark stain for a gradual sunburst, then overcoated with polyurethane. I recently have pulled the old Rick from under the guest bed and put some money into replacing parts and strings.
I appreciate all the cumulative knowledge on this board, and look forward to participating."
I was referring to the bass that is now known around the Forum as the "Mink" (now maybe it should be "Mink 1" as others have found the color irresistible). I don't know where I would be (Rick-wise) without this group!

First off, it's my first post here, just wanted to say hi to everyone! I'm John, 19, and I own a 330FG, 370/12BB, and a 4003JG.
I ordered my Blueburst as soon as they came avilable from The Music Connection, a 350v63!
Has anyone else put in their order for one yet?
Ultimately, my patience wore thin on the wait time and my love for Blueburst faded away. But yet, i'm still here.

A little history. I played in a RR band on a Navy ship 71-73. I always wanted a Ric but thought they were too expensive for someone who didn't have a paying gig. I have been in a praise band for the last dozen years or so (I know, long gap) I never played a Ric because I was afraid I'd fall in love. Kinda like why I don't test drive cars I can't afford!
Ok, I bought this thing off ebay a few weeks ago. I took it to erik's Guitar ship here in the valley, and had the action raised (it was WAY too low), and electronics tested. The fellow I bought it from miswired it so Erik brought it back to stock. It now plays like a dream!
I have some questions. Anyone put a brass nut on a Ric? I'm afraid too with all the sustain it already has. It seems Ric's should be played with a very light touch? When I dig in (as on my jazz copy), the speakers sound like they are "farting", which is usually a sign of overdriving. There is also a slight "fuzz" even when playing lightly. It may be standard but I don't have anything to compare it to.
Has anyone ever mentioned the lacquer on the neck? That is what they do to fretless basses and I thought it was for sustain. Anyone else agree that some of the sustain comes from the lacquered neck. I know you get more sustain from the big bridge, and the neck through, but I think the lacquer also adds. Am I Nuts?
Anyway, I LOVE my bass. 87 may not be the best year, but it's got that Ric sound!

Here's mine from 10/27/01:
-----------------------------
I've wanted a Rickenbacker since before I was a guitar player - 1963, to be precise, when I was smitten by the Beatles. Played a Shaftesbury copy of a 330 in my first 'band' in about 1972, and now, finally, nearly 30 years later, I'm the very proud owner of a brand new 650 Dakota.
I've had it precisely 25 hours (I'm sure I'll stop counting in a few days ), but it feels like I've owned it much longer - it 'fits' me beautifully. Needed a slight truss rod tweak to bring the action to where I like it, but otherwise it was perfect out of the box.
Looking forward to being a more active participant here. Now the saving starts for a 380!
------------------------------
I think this was my first post - how are you guys finding that information? All that shows up for me is my IP address.
Still don't have the 380.... the closest I've got is the Rickenbacker models in my Variax.

Despite valiantly searching in various places, I can't find my first post. I am resigned to the fact that I have no idea what section it was in. Oh well, no big loss really.

I found my second post, but not my first...perhaps it was deleted for contravening the 'nonsensical' rule...figure the odds!
Anyway, I'm with you Brian...what was that Shakespeare line? Something about a dog returning to his vomit...

Nigel: I had the first one made(March 1992), now in the hands of another happy home..it was #383/1000.
I think a total of five were produced, although I never saw a factory figure...
Now, two things about this post; I was going by my "stagename" in The Eggmen, "Nigel". And, in John's reply he says he had the first lefty CS, #383, made in March 1992. Looking at my CS certificate it says mine is #271 and made November 1st, 1991. Hmm...

Anyone going to the Sarasota show on Sunday? I'm driving down from Tampa and was wondering if any Ric lovers would be interested in getting a beer or other tasty beverage. I'm even thinking of bringing a Ric guitar for him to sign... hmm.

Hi,I am new to this board.Last week I bought my first brand new Rickenbacker,a 340 with vintage toaster pickups in Fireglow.I got the silver vintage case too! This is my second Rickenbacker as I used to own a 325C58 in Jetglow but I sold it a couple of months ago.Actually I have only been playing guitar for about 6 months(teaching myself)and I just started taking lessons 2 weeks ago.Don't laugh but I am over 50 years old.Weird huh?Anyway I have loved Rickenbackers since I was a kid.I just got 3 DVDs of my favorite 60's TV show Hullabaloo and it seems as though every band from 1964 to 1966 had at least one Rickenbacker.Growing up I always wanted a 325 like Lennon played or a 12 string like Roger McGuinn. When I was in my 20's in 1978 I saw The Jam at CBGB's Theater in NYC and seeing Paul Weller playing a "blond" Ric rekindled my interest(was it a 330 or 360?Fireglow?).Anyway I just wanted to say I am glad to meet a group of fellow Rickenbacker enthusiasts.Hope you wont mind any dumb questions I may be asking(blend?).

Here is mine, from March 2006, in the "Wanted" section. It's funny how little I knew about Ricks then. After this I bought a forumite's '87 4003JG (a beauty with a nice slim neck), then jumped on the DCM bandwagon, and now I enjoy my 4003 along with the variety of other non-Rick basses I've bought in recent months.
------------------------------------------------
First of all, this is my first post to this group. I'm glad I found it! Great info here.
Basically, I am a 42 year old software engineer in the USA that also enjoys playing the bass, and am really just a novice compared to most of you I would think. I have an old Seiwa Japanese bass that I've had for about 18 years. In the past 2 years I have been playing more, and now I would like to get a better bass. I have always loved the Ric sound (big Yes fan in my youth, and still today), so I have started looking around for a 4001 that is not perfect but does not need alot of work. I don't care how it looks as long as it plays great. Any information to help me out in this search would be much appreciated. I see alot of late-70's models on eBay, but I could use some help to figure out what price makes sense for what I am looking for.
Also, if you consider that I'd like the best Ric "Chris Squire-like" sound possible, than any help with models would be great. I have read mixed reviews about the quality of the 4001CS. You guys can probably tell it like it is when it comes to model history.
I saw this one on eBay last week...
http://cgi.ebay.com/Rickenbacker-4001-1979-Vintage-Black-Bass-Guitar_W0QQitemZ7395105826QQcategoryZ4713QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
This guy ended the auction early for some reason, but it had hit around $600 before he ended it. This seems like what I am looking for. Does it seem reasonable that I should be able to find something like this for $600-800? I wrote the guy and he said it he used it in a band for years and had just gotten something new. What do you guys think this one is worth (assuming it plays fine)?
Any help for my quest for a great starter Ric 4001 series would really be appreciated. Maybe I could even be talked into a 4003 if it makes more sense for what I am looking for.
Thanks,
Greg in MA/USA

Looking above at Charly's first post, it's interesting what you were saying about the bass that is now mine. I think '87 is a great year!

Yeah, the action was still a little low and I never liked the sound through my Eden Rig, but when I went Ampeg............... I also hadn't found out about Chromes yet!!!
Yup, great bass!
