Rick, 1984 and earlier Rickenbackers must have the neck manually held in the desired position, then the truss rod nuts snugged to hold it in place. I would think it best to put the end of the guitar on a carpeted floor between your feet. Then, using your knee as a fulcrum point, apply pressure to the front of the headstock with one hand, and snug the truss rod nuts with the other. You'll want to apply the pressure a little beyond where you want it to end up, to account for the neck's tendency to return to it's original point.
