One problem that seems to be unique to me - when I play guitar a lot, some of the skin from the top layers of the calluses starts to shred and peel of on my fretting fingers.
Nah, it ain't unique to you, Mark. Happens to me on a regular basis. I just keep on playing. They harden up again.

I would think the alcohol would encourage cracking...in a pinch I use crazy glue to help with bleeding. It also works good for right hand fingernail breaks i.e. hybid picking

My guitars/basses do not have any calluses. They have been know to be callous from time to time, but no calluses on any of them.
My calluses however, have tended to soften up a bit in recent years but I do not have any issues with pain, except on long rehearsals/gigs, but it is my hands in general that hurt then.

Play upright bass, as close to daily as possible. Those bad boys'll last forever.

Thanks, Mark. I played around and played around with that until I got that result. It's still not the way I envisioned it - When I get some more time, I'll try again.
