Hi David, you can swap your toaster with my 6,9k toaster (Silva-Machine) personalized by PU expert Sérgio Silva, so it has the absolute vintage sound (like Elys' 1968 4001 21 fretter).

Hi Kevin, I'm going to try your suggestion and see what happens when I bypass the 0.0047uf cap on the treble pup, you never know I might like the tone without the cap, but I would prefer to keep it as original as I can.
Hi Peter, that might be a good option for me if I can't get a good balance between the 12k toaster and the old high gain pup.
What does it sound like, being 6.9k?
Does anyone else have one fitted to a '73ish 4001?

Here is my bypass method:
Cut a short piece of solid core insulated wire, strip both ends, twist the ends tightly around each lead of the cap (while still installed on the bass) using needle nose pliers.
Plug it in & see what you think.
The connection is solid enough to leave without soldering, or you can add a dab of solder if you prefer, but it's simple, and very easy to change back to totally stock if you need to.

Plus five minus five!

I think that probably sums it up. I've been pondering this since recently posting about something similar and I think you've hit the nail on the head. I guess I really consider I need two, as I always like to have a back up. In line with John Entwistle's train of thought, I also tend to like to have a backup for my backup, so I kind of like to have 3. Beyond that, I guess I feel bad - mainly because I personally can't afford them, certainly not through any inherent disbelief in having as many as possible;the fact that I constantly get grief about them doesn't help my guilt here! - but yes, it is lovely to have many more than you actually need. If I had something like Simon Mole's collection I would think I had died and gone to heaven. Only problem is, if I had that many basses and the missus found out, I think that "died and gone to heaven" would be pretty much spot on!!!!

shaun, Jeff, Two very different views but very valid I think.
I would love own an 8 string, a 4080 12, RM1999, you name it, plus dozens of others to go with them in all the various colours available, but here's the problem, I don't have pots of money to finance that sort of collection, but I can always live and dream a little and pick up a nice bargain from time to time, which is part of the fun.
I used to collect Star Trek action figures, but when Playmates lost the license in 1999 they stopped making them and I had no more to collect.
They just sat up in the loft increasing in value ever so slightly until I sold some a couple of months ago.
I've just sold £800 ($1600) worth of Playmates toys and bought myself a 1973 4001, a fair exchange I think.
Now if I could only sell that Star Wars collection, I might be able to get a 4001v63 or something similar!!!!

Oh I'm with Jeff, it's just my bank balance & the missus telling me otherwise!
£800 of Playmates toys for a 1973 4001 sounds like a VERY fair exchange David! Now if you were talking a different sort of Playmates, that might be a different matter...although I'm not sure if you can get any of those for £800. Well, not for keeps anyway.

Steady Boys, don't get too exited now, I was of course refering to the wee toy action figures and noisey ships.
I've still got over 300 ST action figures to sell on ebay, but they're not so desireable or collectable ATM as the ships and accessories are.
Maybe one day soon I'll do it and treat myself to a nice 4000 series bass.
I've been wanting a 4001v63 for yonks, ever since I sold an RM1999 about 15 years ago not knowing it was pretty rare. What a plamph.
I'll let you all know what transpires!
