Roy

here is my vote

first 4 - a fab performance.
second 1 - the first version?
third 3 - this one nearly topped the charts in the UK. Lacks the excitement of version 1.
fourth 2 - not heard this one before, I know who it is but not keen.

Unlikely to get anymore votes but a better response this week so thanks

version 1 was Isley Brothers
version 2 was Mamas and Papas
version 3 was Brian Poole and the Tremeloes
version 4 was The Beatles

Brain Poole etc had a number 4 hit with the song in UK, Beatles version was on First album and an EP .

Isley's version did make number 42 in UK, Mamas and Papas version was an album track.

Based on 4 points for your preferred version 3 for second etc

results were

Beatles 37 pts
Brian Poole/Tremeloes 25 pts
Isleys 23 pts
Mamas and Papas 15 pts

80% of those who voted went for Beatles as their favourite
10% Isleys
10% Mamas and Papas
No one went for Brian Poole/Trems version as their favourite but it scored heavily as second favourite.

For those across the pond, Brian Poole and The Tremeloes were signed to a recording contract with Decca records shortly after the same people who signed them, had turned down The Beatles.

Is that the same band that called themselves just "The Tremelos" and had a hit here in the US with Silence is Golden which was an old Four Seasons album track?

Yes Bob though over here we knew them as Tremeloes. Brian Poole left and Chip Hawkes the bass player took over on lead vocal. Silence is Golden was their third single in their own right

I probably spelled it wrong Roy. Don't know about the The either.

If I had been contesting, I'm pretty sure Mamas&Papas would have got 2nd spot (with me)! I like their different version. Wouldn't have changed anything, though.
Searchers amongst my teenage favourite music. Still fond of them, but earnestly a little puzzled they are considered THIS big! But I'm very excited about this forum, and will love to read it regularly, and also contribute!

Talking of the Tremeloes, here is a great performance of the modern version of the band

The drummer and guitar player are the original members.
