Well, now that you mention it, I can't really remember seeing a '74 with the "new" pickup position farther from the neck... all the ones I can think of have the "old" positioning...but it must have happened somewhere in that timeframe.
I don't know, the reason I said it looked OK is because of the way the screws sit in the holes, much like my basses from that approx. period...
I gotta agree Sergio, that is very inconsistent with others in that year. I wonder if it has red dots on the side of the neck. I've seen that in 1974 models only, although not in many.

There's a '75 with red dots here in town for sale, it's really weird seeing those, wonder what that was about.

Red dots? My June 1974 4001 has these, and as far as I could tell from pictures, the April 1974 4001 I've ordered recently from the States has these too. Maybe all 4001's made in the mid 70's have them?

No, definitely not all mid 70s Ricks, most of them have black dots. I've only seen them on a few '74 models, that I can recall...

I had a '74 with red dots also. I always wondered if it was a rarity. It was mapleglow, serial # NE-3072. Had kind of a mineral stain in the grain on the face of the large cutaway. If I remember correctly, it had tons of low end, and played great.......Oh, to be able to go back about 20 years.

My newly-acquired 1974 4001 has red side dot markers too. Sorry, I don't have any pics of it as yet.
This one 4001 (serial # ND 2485) is totally amazing. I can tell it has seen a fair amount of touring or whatever, but it plays and still looks GREAT! Neck is dead straight, pickups are well balanced, action is set VERY LOW and it probably is not a very common 1974 4001 in that it has a black TRC & pickguard, though I can't be sure.
My sincere thanks to Gregg Silagyi (he hasn't been posting in the Forum for quite some time now) for accepting to sell this magic 4001 to me.
Merry Christmas, guys!

Congratulations, Sergio. Santa was very good to you. Let me guess, you have them all out, side by side and you're just sitting there, staring with glee.

Sorry Guys,
I'm coming in a bit late on this one.
But here's a pic of my April '74 4001 with red dots. I never realized that this feature was so unique.
