Well, even though James Grove's 4001 is not a 'Rickenbacker', it certainly is not a (Japanese or whatever) copy either, which is what I was trying to ascertain and prove. Many thanks again for setting the record straight, John.

My opinion is that it *IS* a copy but it doesn't extend so far as to say it's Japanese. But now that you mention it, to my eye the clarity and coloring of the woods do look more like Asian species.

Gee, look what you're talking about...I've come to the conclusion that it isn't the bass originally attached to the jack plate & serial number. That bass was a fretless in Fireglo. I don't see how you could get the color out of the end grain. I'm no expert though.

Even if I blow off a day at work to drive up, I'm not exactly sure what JH and RIC get out of it, aside from a bit of diversion. If anybody is in San Diego, I can probably find some time for you to look at it.

Andrew, thanks for the positive comments. I like the feature set too.

After thinking a bit more, I've decided that what I would get out of a trip to RIC would be a valid explanation for whenever I sell the bass. I'm kind of SOL otherwise. Mr. Hall - would I be wasting your time?
