Palm muting is your friend!

Hello David,i'm doing fine here in good old England it's raining so what's new.Your C64 does look good with the Hipshot even though like you and many others,i'm a purist at heart which was the main reason why i bought the Ric replacement tailpiece, and had the two extra screws drilled.

While i was having the holes drilled i could'nt belive, i was doing this to a brand new tailpiece that cost £116. I was hoping that my friend who was doing the drilling did'nt start coughing.Though now if i was lucky to get another 4001/4003 i would have the two extra holes drilled again. The feeling knowing that the tailpiece will never lift again is worth it.

Thanks again to Mr.Clauson for the template.

Hi David, good to see your typewriture again. I always have liked that bass, very pretty! I think the Hipshot looks good, but then again I have a 4003s5 with the extra two screws (the 7 hole design?) and I like that as well. So if and when I ever get around to my 4001 with a little lift; I’m not sure which way I’d go. But in any case – good to be reading you again.

I don't think Macca was palm muting on songs like Lucy In the Sky or A Day in the Life.....sure, I could be wrong, but the Rick mute gives a consistent amount of mute every hit. Palm muting is your friend, but the Rick mute is more consistent for recording.

There's that, plus I can't palm mute when playing finger style, and my pick style involves resting my hand on the bridge pickup cover.

You've never wished the singer was mute...?

Reminds me of that Onion headline I saw last week: Marcel Marceau Trapped In Real Box This Time

I like Yesterday. Seeing the bass with the Hipshot and then the RIC tailpieces with the shoes on was surprising to me that I like the clean look of the Hipshot better. Call me a heretic.

You're right about that. That tail lift wasn't too bad really, here is my July '73 4001.

Not too mention some seriously intonation altering bridge tilt.

My July '73 4001 has a little more lift than Jeff's. And that thing rocks the house! It bugs me that the part is failing, and I've bought a new one to replace it, but the bass is one of if not the most resonant and best-sounding Ricks in my stable.
