I figured out my phasing issue. I just changed which wire I grounded on the stacked jazz and everything works great!

They are trying to define terms over at talkbass and ended up with grunt, growl, and snarl for the Fenders (P and J), no mention of clank, or grind!!!!

PS - snarl is defined as very aggressive growl.

I like "gank and clank" and "honk" for Rickenbacker basses.

Well, I am pulling out the Dimarzio P and the SD stacked jazz. I am going to put a stock SX jazz pup and a "vintage" P pup in. I have a feeling I will like the less aggressive "stock" setup better. I'll let you know in a bit, as soon as I finish my soup.......

I put in the other pups today and it is much easier to control. The P pup is actually a Diesel Vintage P, and the "stock" jazz is from the SX relic. I think I like stock! They are perfectly matched volume wise. That was my issue with the other pups I tried, the P was just too hot. So, all that is left is the pickguard and it will be done........

The SD Vintage P and Classic Stack J pickups balance perfectly in my Fender CPS. I am surprised you had so much trouble getting the pickups to work for you.

Charly, they're on the pricey side, but how about a set of Fralin pickups?

It might have worked with an (< I know but it rolls off the tongue better!) SD vintage P, but I had an SB3 P and the DiMarzio P. I didn't try the Diesel vintage P with the SD stacked jazz so it may have been ok. It was definitely not hot, in fact Ihad to have its vol full on with the P just over half way to be equal in volume. Normally I use all 3 switch positions, but today it sounded so good in the middle with the pups balanced, that I just left it alone. It sounds great, in fact, I no longer like how the 4003 sounds with Chromes, the P/J, yes! I need to brighten up the 4003 tone just a tad, so I don't have to completely change the eq when switching basses.

That's looking great Charly.

I am one of the lurkers on this thread too. I have put many Strats together but despite the thought that I should some day, I have never put a P or J bass together from select parts.

Watching and reading about yours coming together has been a bit of a treat.
